Russian Media Market

The economic upturn in Russia has brought the cinema industry in this country into a period of explosive growth.

Domestic products have nearly driven foreign producers out of the television market. The same phenomenon is now impacting the feature film industry.

For the past six years the Russian cinema market has experienced a ten-fold increase in box office receipts, with domestic pictures playing the key role in 2004–2005.

In 2005 alone cinema profits rose by 100 per cent.

The top five successful Russian pictures of 2005 brought in a total of $64.3 million. This is well over the respective American figure. The top five US blockbusters collected only $39.8 million in Russia.

In 2005, the share of Russian movies in national film distribution rose from 15 to 25 per cent.

One-third of cinema profits in Russia, which increased substantially in 2005 and reached $350 million, were collected by domestic projects.

Independent experts predict that Russia will be a top-five distribution market by 2010. A blockbuster will collect box office receipts of up to $50–70 million, and Russian movies will have commercial success outside the CIS.

Consequently, the Russian market is in need of increasingly more new material for adaptation and film production. Therefore, Cinemotion Script Agency is actively searching for foreign screenwriters, to make adapted film versions of their works in Russia. We also invite producers, directors and other experts in the international cinema industry for co-operation and collaboration.
